Microdermabrasion Q & A

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is used to boost your complexion’s softness, texture, and radiance. During microdermabrasion, a technician from Oasis Skincare applies a handheld device equipped with tiny, pressurized crystals to your skin. The old, outer layer of skin cells is sloughed away to reveal fresh, revived cells.

The process also stimulates your body’s production of collagen and elastin. These structural compounds improve your skin’s texture, smoothness, and elasticity.

Microdermabrasion uses no chemicals, needles, or incisions, and it’s noninvasive. It requires no numbing cream prior to a session. You may feel slight discomfort, but most people find it quite tolerable.

What common skin issues can microdermabrasion address?

If you have mild to moderate skin imperfections, microdermabrasion is a good choice. It leaves your skin feeling supple and looking vibrant.

You may choose microdermabrasion to address:

  • Dull skin
  • Sun spots and age spots
  • Crow’s feet
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven coloration
  • Clogged or enlarged pores

Microdermabrasion cannot reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles or lift sagging skin. However, the procedure is effective in addressing moderate signs of aging and can be used on all skin types. The procedure lasts about 30-40 minutes.

Should I schedule downtime following microdermabrasion?

Your skin may look a little pink following a microdermabrasion session. You may also feel as if you have a sunburn with tightness and dryness, so Dr. Riddle recommends you apply a moisturizer to ease any minor discomfort. This discoloration usually fades within 24 hours, so you might choose to lie low, but the procedure doesn’t require you to take time off work or skip daily tasks.

Your skin is temporarily more sensitive to ultraviolet rays after microdermabrasion. You should plan to stay out of direct sunlight and liberally apply sunscreen when you do go outdoors.

How many sessions do I need to get results from microdermabrasion?

In just one session, you get a brighter skin tone and reduced blackheads. For optimal results, plan for 5-8 sessions. People with deep scarring may benefit from as many as 16 sessions. Dr. Riddle typically schedules each microdermabrasion session about one to two weeks apart.
